Welcome to the Cognitive and Neural Mechanisms of Anxiety (CNMA) lab in the Department of Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh!

We study the relationship between anxiety, unwanted thoughts, and cognitive processes such as attention and cognitive control.  We investigate these questions using a wide range of methods, including approaches grounded in experimental psychopathology, clinical and cognitive science, and functional neuroimaging (fMRI). Our goal is to understand the cognitive and neural mechanisms of anxiety, worry, and other kinds of "sticky thoughts," including understanding how these processes go awry in people with emotional disorders. Ultimately we aim to leverage our improved understanding of cognition-emotion interactions to develop more efficient and effective treatments.
